As the world commemorates Road Crash Victims, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) in partnership with key stakeholders in the transport sector is currently remembering victims – the dead and injured- of road crash.
On Monday 14 November, 2022 representatives of the SLRSA were hosted on (SLBC) TV during their weekly SLRSA Hour to discuss the “WEEK OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ROAD CRASH VICTIMS ” and activities.
According to the Public Relations Manager, Mr. Abdul Karim Dumbuya, the week-long commemoration will be observed from the 14th to 20th November. According to him, the essence of the declaration of the said week is in remembrance of victims of road traffic crashes.
He said that Honourable Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Kabineh Kallon, outlined the week’s activities and purpose of the commemoration in a recorded broadcast had on the public broadcaster.
SLRSA Board Secretary, Abu-Bakarr Sheriff Esq, spoke on the significance of the week, and urged that the relevant authorities seek and do justice for road crash victims. He opined that this year’s commemoration is geared towards the remembrance of all road crash victims on the theme “JUSTICE” and the slogan “Remember, Support and Act ” for road crash victims.
According to him, the slogan is meant to address the numerous challenges faced by road crash victims in Sierra Leone and the world at large. He went further to say “Justice” for all road crash victims is a must.
The Public Relations Manager of SLRSA Mr. Abdul Karim Dumbuya, in his submission also discussed the importance of the week, and outlined the activities that the Authority will embark on According to him, the Authority will embark on the following additional activities: media engagement to raise public awareness about the week and road safety; Juma prayer at Bailtula Mosque, Kennedy Street, Freetown on 18th November; inter-faith service at PMB Wellington on 19th November at 10 a.m; and Christian prayer at the Bishop Baughman UMC Bright Street Brookfields at 10 a.m.
Meanwhile, Sector Commander Mr. Dauda A. Kargbo spoke to the dangers of road crashes and how it can be mitigated. In his submission, he warned drivers to drive responsibly while plying the roads and admonished all road users to be mindful when using the roads.
