Lumley Beach, Freetown, 26th October 2024: in On behalf of the Minister of Sports, the Director of Sports in the Ministry of Sport, Mr. Aroun Korgi, launched the Sierra Leone Masters Athletic (SLMA) organization on Saturday, 26th October 2024, at the Montana Car Park, Lumley Beach, Freetown.
In his welcome address, the President of the Sierra Leone Masters Athletic, Mr. Aiah Bockarie, shared that the concept for the SLMA originated from one of Sierra Leone’s former fastest athletes, Mr. Jimmy Thoronka. The association was officially established in December 2023 under the motto, “Age Is Just A Number.”
Explaining the organization’s aims and objectives, Mr. Bockarie highlighted SLMA’s focus on promoting active aging, social integration, and a sense of accomplishment among athletes aged 35 and above. He emphasized that SLMA’s objectives are to encourage and support individuals in their pursuit of fitness and wellness, regardless of age, while providing a platform for older athletes and sports enthusiasts to participate in competitive athletics.
Reflecting on achievements since the association’s establishment, Mr. Bockarie noted that SLMA competed in the Albania Field Masters Championship, where they won medals. The association is now registered with the National Sports Association of Sierra Leone, Freetown City Council, Africa Masters, and World Masters, and their official bank is Sierra Leone’s Rokel Bank. He added that regional coordinators have been appointed to manage SLMA activities across Sierra Leone’s four regions.
Mr. Bockarie concluded by previewing upcoming events, including a local SLMA championship in November. Following this, the organization plans to host training sessions for members to improve athletic skills and fitness levels. SLMA also intends to raise awareness through community outreach programs.
In his statement, Mr. A.G. Koroma, a representative from the National Olympic Committee, highlighted the spirit of friendship among athletes. He noted that SLMA was not created to compete with other organizations but to enable older athletes to share their knowledge and experience with younger generations, fostering the growth of athletics in Sierra Leone. He applauded the SLMA executive and members for their remarkable efforts.
Mr. Momoh Morie, representing the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, expressed his joy at the pivotal launch, calling for collaborative efforts to support athletic development across the country.
Launching the organization on behalf of the Minister of Sports, the Director of Sports, Mr. Aroun Korgi, described the event as a landmark in Sierra Leone’s athletic history. He noted that SLMA reflects the Ministry’s commitment to promoting health, wellness, and a competitive spirit across all ages. He affirmed that SLMA will provide a platform for seasoned athletes to continue excelling while inspiring younger athletes with their resilience, discipline, and passion for sports.
“As a ministry, we are proud to support this initiative, which embodies our mission to make sports accessible and inclusive. Together, let us celebrate our athletes’ achievements and promote lifelong fitness and unity through athletics,” he concluded.
Other notable speakers, including SLMA VP Mr. Yayah Mansaray, shared meaningful contributions, celebrating this significant step forward for sports in Sierra Leone.
