ActionAid Sierra Leone recently conducted a monitoring visit to schools where the digital learning project funded by Imagine Worldwide is piloted.
This initiative, which uses tablets to tackle literacy and numeracy challenges, is active in 19 primary schools across five chiefdoms.
At one of the primary schools visited, teachers and pupils expressed enthusiasm for the tablets, which have significantly boosted attendance and punctuality. The tablets have improved learning outcomes, particularly in mathematics and English, while fostering better reading skills.
“This tablet program has sped up teaching processes and reduced classroom stress by keeping pupils engaged.”
Mr. David Bangura, a class five teacher, disclosed.
Yusif, a class 6 pupil, shared his excitement about the program, saying, “The tablet has helped me a lot to know Maths and English well.”
He ended up showcasing his skill by operating the tablet perfectly.
Osman Kamara, a teacher at one of the primary schools, expressed gratitude, saying, “The tablets have transformed how we teach and learn. Pupils are excited and more engaged than ever before.”
Sylvester Amara, the project manager, put in, “These tablets are designed to provide secure, high-quality educational content.“ Gone are the days when children would go through school without exposure to digital tools. This initiative is not just about improving literacy and numeracy skills but also about empowering children with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world.”
Looking ahead, the schools plan to organize a competition between themselves during the second term to further engage pupils and encourage high performance. The pilot project is paving the way for digital education in Sierra Leone, equipping children with critical skills for the modern world.
