Judiciary of Sierra Leone Communications, Main Law Courts Building, Freetown, 18th February 2025: The Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has assigned four justices of the High Court of Sierra Leone to five district headquarters to expeditiously try over one hundred and seventy-four (174) criminal cases.

The districts include Kono, Kambia, Tonkolili, Koinadugu, and Pujehun.

The sessions, which commenced on the 17th of February 2025 in Koidu and Magburaka, will end on the 1st of March 2025, followed by the sessions in Kambia, Pujehun, and Kabala, involving over two hundred inmates.

Commenting on the crime statistics for the session, PRO 1, Mr. Moses Kamara, said that in previous sessions, this session had nineteen cases of murder, with Kabala accounting for the highest while Kono is leading on sexual penetration cases.

The Hon. Justice Augustine K. Musa, who is presently in Kono, will move to Kabala on the 27th. Hon. Justice Abu Bakarr Sannoh is currently in Magburaka whilst Hon. Justice Mohamed Bawoh will start the Kambia session on the 27th of February and the Hon. Justice Banks-Kamara will be in Pujehun on the same date.

Commenting on the limited number of judges, Mr. Kamara said the situation of the inadequate number of judges has been exacerbated by the recent deaths and retirement of some judges, adding that efforts are on the way to embark on a recruitment process to replace them.

“The present workload on judges is beyond human understanding. However, the Hon. Chief Justice is making frantic efforts to judiciously utilize the limited number of judges to uphold the mission and vision of the institution. The Chief Justice is pushing very hard to ensure that new judges are employed especially at the High Court,” he said.
