Saturday, 7th December 2024: Popular opposition All People’s Congress (APC) politician and leading flagbearer candidate of the party, Ambassador Omrie Golley, has commenced harvesting of about one hundred (100) acres of land of sorghum through his agriculture scheme to empower a large number of women in Makani Village, Paki Massabong Chiefdom, Bombali District, in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone.

This latest agricultural initiative, covering over one hundred acres of prime farmland, is geared towards empowering women farmers in agricultural development involving the production of sorghum wheat for brewing.

This latest drive is to harvest crops for both local and export consumption to create added value in terms of production and sale, which is intended, in turn, to boost the livelihood of local farmers in the region.

During the launch of the harvesting phase, Mr. Mohamed Deen, Project Director of Golley Agriculture Development SL Limited, said the use of women in the farming activities is a clear manifestation of the vision of the CEO Ambassador Omrie Golley towards women’s participation in the advancement of socio-economic growth.

He confirmed that the women will fully participate in the pricing and sale of the crop in line with local and international best practice, securing the ultimate vision of Ambassador Omrie Golley, in placing agriculture at the top of the nation’s development trajectory.

Speaking during the start of the harvesting phase, Pa Santigie Fornah, who is a youth advocate of Makani Village, said that the project has been all-inclusive. He said the project has not only catered to women in Makani alone but also other neighboring communities.

He added that youthful women have been the most significant beneficiaries, with their package of daily payment and other benefits, in an area of the country with enormous structural challenges.

The initiative of Ambassador Golley stems from his countrywide investment in the agricultural sector, which started with the development of agricultural training centers costing him over 1.5 billion Old Leones to improve agricultural production.

Over 200 women and other youths have been trained in the use of drip irrigation in places such as Bumbuna, Port Loko, Bo, and Kenema. There is the move to commence a new training initiative in Makeni.

Ambassador Omrie Golley’s desire to promote women’s welfare is at the forefront of his agenda of their socio-political advancement.
