Parliament unanimously approved the appointment of Her Excellency Madam Michaela Eddina Swallow to serve as the Deputy Permanent Representative (Legal) to the United Nations. The approval took place in the Parliament chamber at Tower Hill on Friday, January 10, 2025, highlighting strong bipartisan support for Madam Swallow’s appointment, which underscores trust in her qualifications and experience.

Hon. Bashiru Silikie, the Deputy Leader of Government Business, praised Madam Swallow for her track record of leadership and impressive academic background, reinforcing her ability to effectively represent Sierra Leone at the UN.

Meanwhile, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, the Leader of the Opposition, urged Madam Swallow to be an ambassador for all Sierra Leoneans, transcending political divides and addressing national matters with fairness and gravity. He reaffirmed the opposition’s confidence in her credentials and advocated for the swift approval of her appointment.

Concluding the debate, Hon. Matthew Nyuma, the Leader of Government Business, commended President Julius Maada Bio for his strategic choice in appointing Madam Swallow. He highlighted the significance of her position, especially as Sierra Leone currently holds a seat on the UN Security Council. Hon. Nyuma encouraged Madam Swallow to stay dedicated to her duties and act with integrity for the nation’s benefit.

“President Bio’s commitment to women’s empowerment shines through this appointment. Madam Swallow’s nomination reflects the remarkable women entrusted with leadership positions in this administration. We are confident she will elevate Sierra Leone’s standing and make meaningful contributions at the United Nations,” Hon. Nyuma declared proudly.

After the debate, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, called for a vote. The unanimous approval confirmed the appointment of Her Excellency Madam Michaela Eddina Swallow.

Following the parliamentary approval, jubilant supporters of the SLPP, along with friends and family members, celebrated outside the Parliament chamber, expressing their appreciation to President Bio for appointing Madam Swallow as part of his commitment to advancing women’s empowerment.

Mrs. Fanta Rogers, the Women’s Leader for Constituency 121, lauded the President: “We, the grassroots, are grateful to President Bio for this appointment. He continues to uplift women of merit, and we take pride in this important achievement.”

Reflecting on her parliamentary approval, Madam Michaela Eddina Swallow conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to her supporters and the president.  “I extend my deepest thanks to everyone for the love and support received today. I pledge to serve diligently and uphold Sierra Leone’s pride. I am grateful to His Excellency President Bio for the faith and confidence shown in me. May God bless you all,” she stated.

Madam Swallow’s appointment reinforces the administration’s dedication to gender empowerment and enhancing Sierra Leone’s global representation. As the Deputy Permanent Representative (Legal), she is well-positioned to make significant contributions to Sierra Leone’s efforts at the United Nations and to collaborate with the outstanding team at the Sierra Leone Mission in New York, led by His Excellency Dr. Michael Imran Kanu.
