Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations held a press conference on January 16th, 2025, to address a concerning incident involving a Sierra Leonean embassy vehicle and personnel in neighboring Guinea.
According to Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Timothy Kabba, on January 13th, 2025, the Government of Guinea informed Sierra Leone that a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean embassy in Conakry had been impounded. The driver and another occupant of the vehicle were arrested on suspicion of possessing substances believed to be cocaine.
This is a serious development, and the government of Sierra Leone is taking it very seriously, said Minister Kabba. “We have urgently recalled our ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, to Freetown to provide a full account of the incident.”
The minister explained that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the facts of what occurred and to hold any responsible parties accountable. Sierra Leone is collaborating closely with Guinean authorities to verify the details.
Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, stated that a specialized team has been set up to investigate the matter further. “We are looking into exactly what happened and who bears responsibility,” he said.
The Minister of Communication and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, noted that according to Guinean authorities, the vehicle had clearance from the Sierra Leonean embassy to travel to Sierra Leone on a mission and then return to Guinea. “The Guinean authorities claim the vehicle was found with seven suitcases full of suspected cocaine, as well as a significant amount of cash,” he said.
The government of Sierra Leone has pledged to fully investigate the incident and take appropriate action. They have assured the public that they are committed to promoting and protecting the integrity and image of the Republic of Sierra Leone on the international stage.
