Dr. Ibrahim Bangura is a Sierra Leonean academic, researcher, and political strategist widely respected for his integrity, intellect, and commitment to national development.
Born in central Freetown, Dr. Bangura is the son of Senior Comrade M.L. Bangura, the first National Secretary General of the APC National Youth League and former APC National Organising Secretary from Mambolo Chiefdom, Kambia District. Growing up in a politically active family, Dr. Bangura developed an early interest in leadership, education, and national service.
He attended the Government Rokel and St. Edward’s Secondary Schools before continuing to Fourah Bay College (FBC), where he earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees. His pursuit of academic excellence took him abroad, where he obtained another master’s degree, a PhD, and several professional certifications from renowned international institutions. Today, he serves as an Associate Professor and teaches at Fourah Bay College and other universities overseas.
During his student years, Dr. Bangura played a pioneering role in student politics and youth mobilization. He founded the Rising Sun group and later established the APC Students Association at Fourah Bay College, now known as the National Union of APC Students (NUAS). He became the association’s first president, setting the foundation for a new generation of politically conscious young leaders.
Although Dr. Bangura did not serve in the last APC government and has never held a formal party position, he has remained a loyal supporter of the All People’s Congress (APC). He has contributed both financially and intellectually to the party, helping to prepare campaign strategies and manifestos for the 2018 and 2023 general elections.
In 2018, he considered contesting for the position of National Secretary General but was advised by senior party elders to step down in the spirit of party unity. Later, when internal challenges arose within the APC through the National Reformation Movement (NRM), the party leadership turned to Dr. Bangura to help mediate the issue. Through his negotiation skills and credibility, he successfully facilitated dialogue that led to the withdrawal of several NRM members from court proceedings, helping restore peace within the party.
Beyond politics, Dr. Bangura has built an impressive professional career at both national and international levels. He has served as a lead consultant for ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), UNDP, UNICEF, and other global institutions. His work focuses on conflict resolution, governance, justice and security sector reform, human rights, gender equality, and sustainable development.
Dr. Bangura is widely regarded as a unifying figure within the APC — respected by party leaders, grassroots members, and flagbearer aspirants alike. Known for his competence, character, and charisma, he is seen as a clean and credible candidate capable of restoring unity and leading the party to electoral victory.
Many former ministers and senior members have publicly expressed their support for him, viewing his candidacy as a timely blessing for the APC. Having never served in government, Dr. Bangura stands free from corruption allegations or controversies, making him a strong and transparent contender.
With his academic excellence, political insight, and international experience, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura embodies the qualities of visionary leadership that can inspire Sierra Leone’s progress and uphold the values of integrity, unity, and service to the nation.
