On 10th, August 2022, Gibrilla Kargbo ran away from armed policemen who were going after him.
Like most Sierra Leoneans, Kargbo and protesters took part in the August 10 protest, which was held for high cost of living and increased youth unemployment in Sierra Leone.
The police engaged protesters in running battles, leaving 31 dead, including six police officers. Angered by the number of casualties they incurred, the police and the army officers led by Deputy Internal Affairs Minister, Lahai Lawrence Leema, embarked on reprisal killings on the evening of the same day during a house-to-house search.
The violent situation forced Karbo out of his home at Ferry Junction in the eastern part of the capital, Freetown. He hid in a neighbour’s house after his mother, father, and sister were allegedly shot dead by the police. Gibrilla Kargbo’s father, Mr. Alimamy Kargbo, is a strong supporter of the main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) party.
Kargbo left Sierra Leone for Guinea on August 12, 2022, after he and several others were declared wanted by the police.
He left Sierra Leone before a curfew was proclaimed by the government. It is reported that Kargbo had left Guinea for a safe haven.
According to our investigation, we understood that Gibrilla Kargbo and others are under warrant of arrest. However, a warrant of arrest remains in force, although nobody knows their whereabouts at the moment.
