A youth identified as Santigie Bai Koroma of Murray Town Freetown was arrested with a loaded gun at the Mayawlaw checkpoint along the Makeni Magburaka highway on Monday. He was arrested while trying to by-pass the check point with the gun in his backpack when he was arrested.
LUC Makeni division, CSP Daniel Amara Bongroh said due to their robust supervision, they were able to discover the loaded gun. “We intercepted one AK 47 with registration number 04194, one magazine with 22 live rounds unmarked and unregistered with the police”, he said. CSP Bongroh said the suspect was on board a vehicle to Kono, hiding the gun in his backpack when he was arrested. Other police sources said the suspect Santigie Bai Koroma attempted to use the bush path instead of the check point which raised suspicion from some community members who alerted the police. The community mobilized and chased the suspect into the bush and handed him over to the police.
Inspector Abdul Rahman Sankoh, Communication officer of the Sierra Leone Police, North East division said the suspect is helping the criminal Investigation Department in their investigations.
