Chairman, Board of Directors, Sierra Leone Cricket Association, Francis Trevor Samura, has told the Independent Observer sports that the U-19 Cricket team will depart Freetown for Lagos to Abuja on Wednesday 28th September 2022 at 13:45 GMT for the U19 Cricket World Cup without government funding.
Francis Trevor Samura said they will travel to Nigeria to compete in the U19 Cricket world cup. They were able to contact Simba Voyages Airline from Rwanda to borrow the tickets in other for the team to participate in this year’s U19 Cricket World Cup.
He said the team will depart with a 21-man delegation and the Airline is expecting the Association to pay for their tickets by the end of the tournament.
He said the last time the Association received funding from the Ministry of Sports (through reimbursement) was in 2018. This is in spite of the fact that cricket is among the five prioritized sporting disciplines in the country.
Mr. Samura said they are expecting this team to perform extremely well in this year’s competition despite the challenges.
