President of the Sierra Leone Swimming Diving and Water Polo Association Mohamed Turay has told this medium that they have been under intensive training ahead of the 16th FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne Australia.
The competition will kick start from December 13th 2022 to 18th December 2022.
He said the athletes are undergoing a lot of constraints as they have to move all the way to the beach to have effective training.
Mohamed Turay also said during the days when we used to have training sessions at the Siaka Stevens Stadium Swimming Pool.
“We undergo constraints but as an association we always fight for the athletes,” he said.
He said this is a big championship and their top athletes are ready to represent Sierra Leone in this competition but the constraints we are facing as an organization is very difficult for the athletes to be everyday at the beach.
“As a President together with my executive we are fighting all out for the association to compete in the international swimming competition we traveled to Budapest in Hungary in June where we put our case across as an association to the International Swimming Federation.
“But at home we are expecting the NSA and the Ministry of Sports to support the Association in this International championship. The boys and girls are representing Sierra Leone and it is the responsibility of the government of Sierra Leone to support these young athletes,” he said.
Top swimming athlete Joshua Wyse said as a senior athlete in the association coming back from the Commonwealth Games he is ready to compete again in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Australia in December.
“But I want to call on the NSA, Ministry of Sports and the government of Sierra Leone that we use to bring glory to the nation, so we are looking forward to bringing more medals from Australia.”
