The Sierra Leone U-19 Cricket team returned home safely on Sunday after qualifying for the ICC World Cup in March 2023.
The Director of the Board of the Sierra Leone Cricket Association Francis Trevor Samura said after their qualification to the Division 1 said:
“We are happy we have returned home and at the end of the tournament, we were able to qualify the country for the Division 1 Cricket World Cup which is the final stage of qualifiers which have to commence next year March 2023. For the qualifiers at Division II, we came 3rd joining Kenya and Nigeria who came 1st and 2nd to proceed to Division 1.
“The team has returned home. We will continue our effective training sessions and determine to qualify the country.”
He called on the government to render them support as the female U-19 team was back in town after their successful performance – and are yet to receive their per diem.
“The male team is with the same problem, so we are calling on the Ministry, the NSA, and the Minister of Sports to support us as we look forward to qualifying for the U-19 Cricket World Cup next year 2023.
“It is true that we went for this tournament without any government support to the team but to God be the glory we have now qualified the country to the Division 1 and the Airline that took us to Abuja, Nigeria for the tournament was on credit.
“We promised the airline that they will receive their money on our return, so we are calling on the government, the Ministry, and the NSA to support us as we want to stay focused and train for the qualifiers in March 2023.
