In a disturbing turn of events, the Division 2 match between Jala FC and Rokel FC at the Approved School witnessed a vicious attack on the center referee and his assistants by Rokel players following the awarding of a penalty kick.
This incident mirrors a similar scene that unfolded during the COFA Inter-Area Champions League, where Fourah Bay was granted a penalty against Bambra Tong, leading to an attack on the match officials.
These repeated attacks on referees have raised serious concerns about the safety and integrity of the game in Sierra Leone. The Football Association is urged to take immediate action to investigate these incidents and implement strict penalties for those who engage in such violent behavior.
Referees are the backbone of the sport, responsible for ensuring fairness and upholding the rules of the game. Their safety must be of paramount concern for league organizers, who are called upon to enhance security measures during matches to prevent further occurrences of violence.
The football community in Sierra Leone stands united in advocating for respect and safety in the beautiful game. Referees’ lives matter, and the sport must be free from aggression and intimidation. The governing bodies must take decisive steps to protect the integrity of the game and restore the confidence of players, officials, and fans alike.
