By Joseph S. Conteh

Ishmail Saidu Kanu, an experienced journalist with over 15 years of standing, has made a name for himself as one of the most accomplished sports writers in Sierra Leone.

Starting his career at Culture Radio, BBN, and Plain Truth Newspaper, Ishmail currently serves as the Managing Editor of the Tribune Times Newspaper, where he has continued to excel in his craft.

Ishmail’s impressive resume includes a wealth of experience in the media industry as well as the distinction of being the sole sports journalist in Sierra Leone with an LLB degree. He holds a BSc and an LLB Hons from Fourah Bay College (USL) and a BL from the Sierra Leone Law School.

Ishmail’s contributions to sports journalism in Sierra Leone have been recognized through numerous awards, both nationally and internationally. He was ranked 9th out of 348 journalists in Africa in the 2023 AIPS Annual Media Awards. He was the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists’ Sports Journalist of the Year in 2016 and 2019. He won the Vicky Remoe Prize for Best News Writing in 2023.

Additionally, he has previously served as the Public Relations Officer for the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASL), a position in which he excelled.

Now, Ishmail is poised to take on a new challenge as he aims to contest for SWASAL President. This move is seen by many as an opportunity for Kanu to further contribute to the growth and development of sports journalism in the country.

Sports enthusiasts and journalists alike are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of Kanu’s manifesto, which is expected to outline his vision for the association and the sports journalism industry in Sierra Leone.

With his extensive experience, educational background, and proven track record of success, Ishmail Saidu Kanu is well-positioned to lead the SWASL and drive positive changes in the field of sports journalism in Sierra Leone.
