Hon. Paul Samba Conteh, a Member of Parliament of the Opposition APC from Bombali District, began by thanking the Minister of Finance and his team for putting together the 2025 budget. Reflecting on past promises, he reminded the House of a commitment made by the former Minister of Finance, Mr. Jacob Jusu Saffa, who later became Chief Minister and is now an ordinary “jebu” seller. In 2020, Mr. Saffa assured the people of Briwa Chiefdom, specifically Kamabai town, that they would receive electricity by the end of 2021. While installations were completed, including meters, the government has since turned its back on the people.
Up to now, we don’t have light, Hon. Paul Samba Conteh lamented. He passionately appealed to the Minister of Finance, stating, On behalf of my people in Briwa Chiefdom, I am pleading. It is our right to have electricity. Since all installations are already in place, please ensure we get electricity by the end of this year.
On road infrastructure, Hon. Conteh highlighted the plight of Karene, which is one of the most SLPP-supportive villages in the North. During the rainy season, he personally offered his FJ Cruiser vehicle to help transport people between Karene Junction and Karene Town due to the poor road conditions. The section chief of Karene called me and said, We voted for the SLPP government, but they have completely disappointed us, Hon. Conteh narrated.
Turning to budgetary allocations, he expressed concern over the disparity in funding. It is unfair that the Chief Minister’s Office is allocated Le 79,435,800, while the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) receives just Le 13 million, he pointed out. Hon. Conteh appealed for a supplementary increase in the ACC’s budget to enable them to continue their diligent fight against corruption and push it out of the country.
