Judiciary of Sierra Leone Communications, Chief Justice’s Chambers, Law Court Building, Freetown, 15th January, 2025:  Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Hon. Alpha Sesay, has assured the Honourable Chief Justice, the Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, of the government’s commitment to make access to effective justice delivery free, fair, transparent, and accountable to the people.

On his first courtesy call on the Chief Justice since his appointment by His Excellency the President in December, the Minister said the government is committed to working together with all other key players in the justice system to ensure the full implementation of Sierra Leone’s Justice Sector Reform Strategy, which was launched by the President on the 12th of September, 2024.

The strategy, according to him, has four strategic objectives that will help strengthen access to justice through a people-centered approach, expedite justice delivery through training and digital case management, strengthen human rights and the rule of law, and strengthen justice sector institutions for effective service delivery.

He maintained that the strategy also focuses on reforms in other sectors such as the police and correctional services. He added that what remains central is how they would ensure that there is effective coordination with police, the attorney general’s office, the judiciary, the correctional service, and communities in the justice delivery process.

The minister added that the government is aware that the justice delivery process shouldn’t only be in Freetown, so the strategy is designed to ensure that those in the provinces equally see the justice system work for them with much increase in the standards and professionalism in the legal profession.

In his remarks, the Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda disclosed that an independent and impartial judiciary is at the heart of any thriving democracy that prioritizes human rights and the rule of law. He assured that his leadership will uphold the mission of the Judiciary by upholding the Constitution of Sierra Leone and the rule of law as well as adjudicating over cases in order to promote national peace, security, and development. He emphasized his resolve to change the public’s perception of the institution and build trust in the justice system.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uphold and maintain the independence of the judiciary at all times.
