The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, has entreated stakeholders in the artisanal fisheries sector to abide by rules and regulations governing this year’s CLOSED SEASON measure, aimed at conserving the country’s rich fisheries and marine resources.

Speaking during a nationwide tour of fishing communities, including Shallah Water, Tambacullah, Moa Wharf, Portee/Rokupa, Bonthe, and Shenge, the minister, who was accompanied by her deputy, Haja Isata Abdulai Kamara, management staff of her ministry, and other key stakeholders, reinforced the government’s desire to ensure sustainable management of the country’s fisheries for the benefit of all.

The meetings, she said, were held to sensitize and remind fishers about the importance, procedures, and benefits associated with the exercise.

She spoke about plans her ministry has put in place to cushion some of the challenges fishers will be facing during the Closed Season, slated for 1st – 28th February 2025, including the provision of basic alternative livelihoods, access to affordable fish products, and Football Gala in fishing communities across the country.

She intimated that her ministry will be working in close collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Sierra Leone Navy, Office of National Security, National Consortium of Fishermen, and Maritime Administration to ensure compliance and called on all for cooperation.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Haja Isata Abdulai Kamara; Acting Director of Fisheries, Sheku Sei; representatives of the Sierra Leone Navy; and other senior management staff of the ministry underscored the importance of the initiative and the need for compliance.

Interim Head of the National Consortium of Fishermen, Gbessay Kabia, encouraged his compatriots to compliment the government’s effort in developing the fishing industry.

With effect from midnight, 31st January, 2025, all fishing canoes are expected to anchor at their respective landing sites.

Implementation of the CLOSED SEASON will be followed by robust monitoring, surveillance, and enforcement with no stones left unturned for defaulters.

The initiative will also help reduce fishing. efforts and illegal fishing activities and increase fish stocks and productivity.
