Elections to elect a new executive for the Sierra Leone People’s Party in Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom on Saturday, 15th February 2025, ended in commotion with many left with injuries, wounds, and properties destroyed.
The unfortunate incident started after the two camps contesting the elections presented two different lists of electorates. The presentation of the two lists caused uproar after allegations and counter-allegations emerged from the camps.
Though there was a police presence, the elections couldn’t end well, and the security officers present couldn’t stop the stoning of houses and physical attacks on scores of party supporters who were left with wounds and injuries.
One of the victims was left with burnt wounds; he was reportedly attacked while returning back home from the home. In all of these, none of the camps have taken responsibility. Instead, they are pointing fingers at each other.
The house of the Paramount Chief in Kholifa Mabang Chiefdom was stoned, and some of the glasses were damaged. An old man residing in the house of the chief was also physically assaulted.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone Police executed an arrest, and the suspects were transported to the Mile 91 police station.
Some of the victims have been taken to nearby hospitals.
Residents have expressed dissatisfaction over the rise in violence and tension anytime the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party had elections and called for an investigation.
A few days ago, the party sectional elections ended in a confrontation between supporters of the two candidates for the SLPP chairmanship in Tonkolili District. The outcome of it saw the burning down of houses and other properties worth millions.
