Sierra Leone’s national football team, the Leone Stars, has been making waves in the World Cup 2026 African qualifiers, with a mix of home-based and foreign-based players. Under the leadership of head coach Mohamed Kallon, the team has shown impressive performance, despite a narrow loss against the powerhouse Egypt.
In their first match, the Sierra Leone Stars secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau, showcasing the strength of their homegrown talent. Kallon, who has been working to integrate more local players into the national team, was pleased with the team’s performance.
However, the second match against Egypt proved to be a tough challenge. Despite a solid effort, Leone Stars fell short, losing 1-0 to the North African giants. Yet, the team’s performance has garnered praise from fans and pundits alike, who have been impressed by the team’s competitive spirit and the coach’s faith in the country’s domestic talent.
This newfound emphasis on home-based players is a significant shift for the Sierra Leone national team, which has traditionally relied heavily on foreign-based professionals.
