Sadness gripped Tonkolili District and its people following the announcement of the death of one of the community’s industrious journalists and young people.

Abdul Karim Kanu, a respected journalist and the Deputy Station Manager of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in Magburaka, was announced dead in the afternoon hours of Tuesday 22nd April 2025. According to information, he died at the Makeni regional hospital after he reported a heart attack.

Announcing Kanu’s death, SLBC Magburaka Station Manager Mohamed Adam Jr. described his late colleague as one of the organisation’s greatest assets.

“With regret and extreme sadness, we announced the dearth of Mr Abdul Karim Kanu, the Manager’s obituary announcement reads.

At age 39, Kanu was the deputy manager and finance officer of SLBC Magburaka and a former branch youth chairman of the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, among others.

A condolence book is open at SLBC Magburaka for the late journalist, according to the station manager.

The news of Abdul Karim Kanu’s sudden departure has left a profound impact on all who knew him. His leadership, professionalism, and kind spirit will be dearly missed, and his memory will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Residents have been sending out condolence messages to the bereaved family, his colleagues, and the media fraternity in Tonkolili.

May the soul of Abdul Karim Kanu rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to shine bright in the hearts of those who knew him, a Tonkolili resident wrote on WhatsApp.

The family and the SLBC have not announced when and where he would be buried but promised to inform the public later.
