Rabat, Morocco, 10th May 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, His Excellency Alhaji Momodu Koroma, on Friday met with Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Dr. Leila Benali, to explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy transition and sustainable development. The meeting took place at the minister’s office in Rabat.
During the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities for knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration, particularly in renewable energy, rural electrification, and sustainable mineral management. They also considered the development of a formal cooperation framework related to environmental protection and sustainable growth.
Discussions further touched on Morocco’s flagship initiatives to promote regional integration and South-South cooperation under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. These include the Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline and the broader Africa-Atlantic Initiative, aimed at fostering sustainable development across the continent.
Ambassador Koroma specifically called for the activation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Sierra Leone and Morocco in Dakhla on energy cooperation. This agreement involves the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). He invited both institutions to visit Sierra Leone for an on-ground assessment and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s interest in participating in the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project.
The ambassador recalled that Sierra Leone signed the MOU for the gas pipeline project on Monday, 5th December 2022, in Rabat. The project, which aims to link Nigeria to Morocco, is expected to supply gas across West Africa and into Europe. He emphasized that Sierra Leone’s involvement reflects President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to addressing the global energy crisis and contributing to the success of this transformative initiative.
The estimated $25 billion African gas pipeline is projected to provide energy to approximately 340 million people and significantly reduce gas flaring on the continent.
Morocco and Sierra Leone continue to enjoy strong bilateral ties, and Ambassador Koroma remains committed to further strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit.
