The Forum of Islamic Organizations for Peaceful Coexistence in Sierra Leone held a fruitful discussion with Hon. Mrs. Melrose Karminty, the country’s social welfare minister. The main topics of conversation were social cohesiveness, peaceful coexistence, inter-sectarian harmony, and working together on national concerns projects nationwide.
During the meeting, Alhaji Justice Abu Bakarr King, President of the forum, emphasized the vital role of dialogue and mutual understanding among Sierra Leone’s diverse religious communities. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Forum and the Ministry to promote peaceful coexistence among the various Muslim sects in the country. Additionally, he underscore that the Forum is the only Islamic organization uniquely includes all three major Islamic sects- Sunni, Shia and Ahmadiyya- demonstrating its commitment to unity and inclusivity within Sierra Leone Muslim community.

In his remarks, Alhaji Wusha-Conteh, Secretary General of the forum, formally presented an invitation to the Minister to attend their upcoming Inter-Sectarian Dialogue on Peaceful Coexistence and National Development. He highlighted the progress made so far in fostering interfaith harmony and emphasized that since the Ministry of Social Welfare is the parent ministry of religious affairs, organizations like theirs should keep the ministry informed about their activities and initiatives.

In her remarks, Minister of Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs. Melrose Karminty expressed her appreciation for the forum’s efforts in promoting peace and unity, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance social harmony. She highlighted the strides made so far in resolving religious disputes and disclosed the government’s plan to develop a comprehensive policy aimed at strengthening both inter- and intra-religious tolerance. Minister Karminty emphasized that, given the constitutional provision for freedom of religion; Sierra Leone is widely recognized for its religious tolerance. However, she also noted concerns about individuals who seek to disturb the peace of the country and underscored the importance of ongoing efforts to maintain harmony among all religious communities.
Both parties explored potential partnerships to implement community outreach initiatives and conflict resolution strategies aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence. The forum also discussed proposal for joint campaigns to address social issues such as the rampant use of drugs by the youths and religious intolerance.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue working collaboratively toward a more inclusive and harmonious Sierra Leone, highlighting the vital role of religious organizations towards nation building.
