The Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST) continues to enhance its international partnerships, notably with Suzhou University of Science and Technology (SUST) in China. This collaboration aims to foster academic growth, research, and exchange opportunities.

In September 2024, a team from EBKUST, including Dr Joseph Davies, Dr Maurice B. Kargbo, and Dr Robert Kargbo, visited SUST to formalise cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement sets the framework for collaborative efforts such as supporting EBKUST’s Open Distance Learning (ODL) programme, promoting exchange programmes for students and faculty, and engaging in joint research projects.

Building on this foundation, another EBKUST delegation led by Vice-Chancellor and Principal Rev. Professor Edwin J.J. Momoh visited SUST on September 15, 2025. He was accompanied by Dr Joseph Davies, Mr Mohamed Turay, and Dr Jenner Bebeley. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the next steps for implementing the MoU’s provisions.

During the meeting, SUST reiterated its dedication to the partnership and approved several initiatives to advance collaboration:

1. EBKUST will propose short-term technical training courses to the Chinese Embassy in Freetown. These courses aim to equip faculty and technical staff with enhanced skills for the university’s Open Distance Learning program.

2. Both universities will work together to secure Chinese research funding, supporting collaborative scientific and academic projects.

3. Students and academic staff from EBKUST’s Faculty of Engineering will have opportunities to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees at SUST.

This strengthened partnership is expected to significantly build EBKUST’s academic and research capabilities, providing new avenues for growth and international experience for both faculty and students.

Alimamy Mamoud Larkoh

Assistant Public Relations Officer EBKUST
