A groundbreaking partnership between the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), the Makeni Campus, and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) was officially launched on October 8, 2025, at the University Secretariat in Magburaka.
The collaboration marks a major step forward in promoting entrepreneurship and expanding job opportunities for young people across Sierra Leone.
The event brought together senior representatives from both institutions and underscored a mutual commitment to empowering youth, driving innovation, and building resilient local economies. Central to this initiative is the creation of a new Entrepreneurial Hub at EBKUST, aimed at nurturing startup ventures and developing practical skills among students and local communities.
Opening the ceremony, University Registrar Mr Oscar Oladipo Hughes welcomed attendees and expressed sincere appreciation to the ILO. He reaffirmed the university’s goal of establishing a vibrant environment that supports innovation and enterprise.
In his keynote speech, Mr Tonderai Manoto, Chief Technical Adviser for the ILO in Sierra Leone, lauded EBKUST for its forward-looking vision and dedication to youth development. He stressed that community involvement would be crucial for long-term success and encouraged the integration of traditional knowledge and local context in training programmes.
Mr Manoto also praised the leadership of Rev. Professor Edwin J.J. Momoh, Vice Chancellor and Principal of EBKUST, stating that his guidance would ensure the partnership’s sustainability beyond its initial phase.
Responding to the ILO’s remarks, Professor Momoh expressed deep gratitude for the collaboration and recognised Dr Joseph Davies, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Makeni Campus, along with the Extra-Mural Team, for laying the groundwork for this alliance.
Professor Momoh further outlined the main goals of the partnership, emphasising a market systems approach to tackle gaps in entrepreneurial skill-building.
He highlighted the vital role young people will play in leading and maintaining innovation hubs, referencing successful international examples as models.
The event concluded with the official authorisation of Dr Joseph Davies to sign the Operational Agreement for the Entrepreneurial Hub on behalf of the University. In his closing remarks, Dr Davies extended thanks to all involved and reaffirmed EBKUST’s strong commitment to making the initiative a success.
This partnership represents a significant advancement in Sierra Leone’s efforts towards inclusive growth, youth empowerment, and long-term sustainable development.
