The Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone (EPASL) has taken decisive action against illegal mining activities in Rosinth village, Yele Chiefdom, Tonkolili district. In a joint operation with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the agency destroyed 192 drums used for preparing local dredges and six power tiller machines.
According to Charles Lebbie Jr, Senior External Relations and Advocacy Officer at EPASL, the agency acted on intelligence information to target and dismantle the illegal mining operations. These activities have been linked to severe environmental degradation, river pollution, and social impacts in the affected communities.

The agency’s Northern Regional team had conducted village-to-village sensitisation to raise awareness about the long-term consequences of illegal mining. Despite the short-term financial benefits, these activities pose lasting harm to the environment, public health, and development.
EPASL’s Regional Manager, Mr Sheku Sillah, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting sustainable and legal mining practices. He emphasised the importance of collaboration with chiefdom authorities, local communities, and stakeholders to protect natural resources while fostering economic growth.

In a notable development, some community youth who aided the enforcement team raised concerns that their town head had abetted these illegal activities. The town head was subsequently taken to the Mena Police in Makeni for questioning.
This operation highlights EPASL’s ongoing efforts to combat environmental degradation and promote responsible mining practices in Sierra Leone. The agency’s actions demonstrate its commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future for its citizens.
