Women-led civil society groups in Bombali District are continuing peacebuilding work even after the end of a two-year United Nations-funded project.
The project, called “Localization and Working Together for Peace,” was supported by the UN Peacebuilding Fund and brought together several community groups to promote peace, protect women and girls, and fight harmful practices.
At a review meeting in Makeni, the Peacebuilding Fund Secretariat praised the efforts of the local groups, noting that they are still using the project’s framework to create lasting change.
The women’s coalitions said they are working to stop female genital mutilation (FGM) among underage girls, tackle drug abuse among young people, and empower survivors of violence to rebuild their lives.
However, they appealed for more support, including better court monitoring, more resources, and outreach to hard-to-reach communities so that vulnerable women and girls can access justice and protection.
The project was part of wider UN efforts to strengthen peace and human rights across Sierra Leone, especially in communities recovering from conflict and inequality.
