On Tuesday, 28 October 2025, Her Worship the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, met with and addressed more than 700 Community Engagement and Enforcement Workers during a joint session at City Hall, expressing her appreciation for their dedication and commitment to advancing the city’s waste management efforts.
She reaffirmed her optimism that ongoing initiatives under the #DortiMusGo campaign are steadily transforming Freetown. She reflected on the city’s waste management journey, which began in 2016 with Operation Clean Freetown, a pioneering initiative that empowered young people to collect waste using tricycles. The lessons from that model, she noted, informed the development of the new Sanitation Byelaws, which strengthen regulation, coordination, and accountability across the waste management sector.
“Under this new approach, we have brought everyone on board,” the Mayor said. “The private sector, the Metropolitan Police, and over 700 community enforcers are now working together to ensure full compliance and effective enforcement.”
The session was also attended by FCC’s waste service providers, giving the Mayor an opportunity to commend their efforts in registering households and improving waste collection across the city. She further acknowledged the progress FCC has made over the years and expressed gratitude to all partners and stakeholders supporting the drive toward a cleaner, healthier Freetown.
The engagement marked another key milestone in the #DortiMusGo campaign, which aims to ensure the full implementation of Freetown’s new Sanitation Byelaws. The dedicated community engagement and enforcement teams have now begun outreach activities across the city — visiting neighbourhoods, markets, and business districts to sensitise residents and business owners on their responsibilities under the new byelaws and to encourage active participation in keeping Freetown clean, safe, and sustainable.
