By Joseph S Conteh

The Mayor of Freetown City Council (FCC), Ivonne Aki Sawyerr, and Chief Councillor Zainab Conteh convened a press conference on the 10th of November, 2025, at the Freetown City Council Hall.

The focus of the meeting was to raise concerns about the sustained intimidation and victimisation experienced by female political leaders within the council.

Chief Councillor Zainab Conteh, who was elected to her position with unanimous support from 40 councillors, highlighted the challenges faced by women in politics.

She recounted a recent incident where the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs questioned her ability to act as the mayor, terming the encounter as disrespectful and intimidating. Despite the challenges, Conteh remains resolute in defending the democratic space for women in governance.

Mayor Ivonne Aki Sawyerr expressed solidarity with Conteh and denounced the actions of the local government service commission, which she believes are designed to undermine the authority of the Freetown City Council. Seeking intervention from the vice president and Parliament, Sawyerr emphasised the council’s responsibility to the residents of the city and the importance of upholding service delivery.

Councillor Agnes Marah also shared her experience of bullying and interference by the Chief Administrator, underscoring the need to uphold the roles and responsibilities of elected officials within the council.

Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk expressed his support for Mayor Sawyerr and fervently advocated for women’s empowerment within the council. The leadership of Freetown City Council remains committed to addressing these issues and ensuring a conducive environment for women in politics.
