Judiciary Communications and Public Affairs, 13th November, 2025: Four staff members of the Judiciary of Sierra Leone are currently in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China, attending a three-week professional course on Environmental Governance at the Biogas Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. As part of the programme, the delegation will also visit Dali Province and Guangzhou City for site visits and knowledge exchanges with local institutions and practitioners.

Since the Chief Justice’s appointment to the Bench in 2005, this marks the first time in nearly two decades that both management and junior staff of the Judiciary are traveling outside Sierra Leone to participate in such a professional development training programme.

The training forms part of ongoing international cooperation between Sierra Leone and China under the Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at strengthening institutional capacity in sustainable environmental management and eco-governance.

Participants are expected to gain practical exposure to China’s advanced approaches to environmental protection, ecological conservation, the formulation and enforcement of environmental policies and regulations, and the integration of renewable energy in rural and urban development. The knowledge and skills acquired will enhance environmentally responsible judicial practices and strengthen the Judiciary’s role in enforcing environmental laws and regulations back home.

This initiative was facilitated by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda as part of his continuous drive to build the capacity of judicial staff. Under his leadership, the Judiciary has prioritized professional development and international exposure, ensuring that staff benefit from specialized training in diverse areas such as digital justice, human rights, and environmental law.

Chief Justice Kamanda underscores that a knowledgeable and globally exposed judiciary is essential for effective justice delivery and the promotion of sustainable national development.

He expressed his appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, through the Chinese Ambassador in Freetown, for organizing and sponsoring the training programme for four judicial staff members.

“We are grateful to the Chinese Embassy for its continued support and partnership with the Judiciary,” the Chief Justice stated.
