By: Zacharia Jalloh, Ministry of Information and Civic Education

Sierra Leone has recorded another notable improvement in its fight against corruption, moving five places up in Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), according to the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah.

Announcing the development at the weekly government press conference, Minister Bah disclosed that Sierra Leone progressed from 114th position in 2024 to 109th out of 182 countries assessed in 2025, a continued upward trajectory in the country’s anti-corruption drive.

He explained that when President Julius Maada Bio assumed office in 2018, Sierra Leone was ranked 130th globally. The current position at 109th means the country has climbed 21 places during President Dr Julius Maada Bio’s tenure.

“This steady improvement reflects the Government’s sustained commitment to fighting corruption and strengthening transparency, accountability, and institutional reforms,” Minister Bah stated.

According to the 2025 CPI report, Sierra Leone now ranks above 73 countries worldwide, including 30 African nations such as Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Kenya. The Minister emphasized that the country’s progress is particularly significant at a time when several major nations across the world have recorded setbacks in the global anti-corruption index.

The Corruption Perception Index, published annually by Transparency International, measures perceived levels of public sector corruption based on expert assessments and opinion surveys. It remains one of the most widely recognized global benchmarks for evaluating transparency and governance standards.

Minister Chernor Bah reiterated that the Government’s anti-corruption reforms which include strengthened oversight institutions, public sector reforms, and increased enforcement actions are contributing to improved international confidence in Sierra Leone’s governance systems.

He noted that while progress has been made, the Government remains committed to deepening reforms to ensure that transparency and accountability become firmly rooted in public institutions.

The latest CPI improvement adds to Sierra Leone’s growing international profile and signals continued efforts to consolidate gains in the fight against corruption under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio.
