The Managing Director of the National Tourist Board, Fatmata Mida Carew, says Sierra Leone is expecting 1,280 tourists for the Budapest-Bamako rally. Madam Carew was speaking during the weekly press conference at the Miatta Civic Center.

She said the huge number of tourists will come in several batches over the next one month, after a huge contingent that arrived just days ago.

Madam Carew said the selection of the country as the permanent finish line of the Budapest–Bamako Rally reflects growing international confidence in the country as a tourism destination.

She described the rally as the largest amateur rally in the world and that discussions around a ten-year agreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs signals trust in Sierra Leone’s tourism potential. “It shows growing confidence in Sierra Leone as a tourism destination,” she said

Adding that: “When tourists come and choose to end their journey in our country, it means money stays in our economy and supports local businesses,” she said, explaining that tourism has a multiplier effect across hotels, transport, food, arts and crafts, nightlife and local services.

She added that many of the vehicles and motorbikes used during the rally are sold locally which creates additional economic value, while some visitors stay for weeks or even a month.

Beyond the rally, Carew said tourism promotion remains ongoing. “We are not stopping at hosting the rally; the Ministry and the National Tourist Board are continuing activities that promote tourism and keep Sierra Leone visible as a destination,” she noted.

She explained that while ecotourism was the focus last year, this year’s tourism theme centers on culture and creativity, supported by initiatives such as the ‘Tourism for All’ campaign.

Carew also highlighted ongoing projects including the Leicester Peak project with the World Bank, the Tacugama Innovation Center, Bureh Surf Club and the restoration of the old Fourah Bay College building, as well as events like the One Nation Reggae Festival aimed at attracting visitors.

“Sierra Leone is not just a destination with beautiful beaches; it is a country known for its warmth, hospitality and friendly people,” she added.

The National Tourist Board says these efforts are aimed at strengthening tourism development and positioning Sierra Leone as a sustainable and welcoming destination.
