Sierra Leone has taken another major step toward improving financial inclusion with the official launch of the Regional Cooperative Credit Union, an initiative designed to expand access to savings and affordable loans for communities across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Joseph Ayamga, Country Director, described the new credit union as “not just a financial mechanism, but a pathway to dignity, resilience, and opportunity for every man and woman striving to build a better future.”
He said the initiative, implemented through KAKEBO Financial Services, will give community members greater power to manage their finances, invest in businesses, and strengthen their livelihoods—especially those historically excluded from formal banking systems.
Ayamga also praised the collective effort behind the achievement, noting that “true development happens when communities are empowered to lead, participate, and benefit equally.”
The launch was supported by Irish Aid, the Embassy of Ireland in Freetown, and UNDP Sierra Leone, reflecting a shared commitment to economic justice, gender equality, and sustainable development.
Organisers extended gratitude to development partners, community leaders, and participants for their support, stressing that collaboration remains key to building a stronger and more financially empowered Sierra Leone.
The Regional Cooperative Credit Union is expected to begin operations immediately, with plans to scale nationwide.
