Freetown, 9th April, 2026 – The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) is recovering from a devastating fire that engulfed the top floor of its Freetown headquarters on April 8, destroying equipment worth millions of leones.

The blaze, which broke out in the office of Deputy Director General Mohamed Asmieu Bah, reduced vital broadcasting assets to ashes, including computers, television monitoring screens, mobile phones, cash, and official documents.

In a show of solidarity, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a leading flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress (APC) and widely known for his philanthropic work, paid a courtesy visit to the state broadcaster. Expressing deep sadness over the incident, Dr. Bangura urged SLBC management and staff to remain resilient.

“This is sad and I must say I felt the pain as a Sierra Leonean. I know the critical role the media plays in shaping society,” he said.

Dr. Bangura presented a donation of $5,000 and two laptop computers to support SLBC’s recovery efforts. His gesture was welcomed by SLBC Director General Josephine Kamara, who described the visit as a sign of appreciation for the broadcaster’s role as the “true voice of the people.”

Deputy Director General Bah also expressed gratitude, praying that such an incident would not recur and calling for continued support to strengthen the institution.

Dr. Bangura, nicknamed “The Saviour” by supporters, has long been associated with humanitarian initiatives in healthcare, education, and community development. His visit to SLBC is seen as part of his broader commitment to national progress and empathy for institutions serving the public interest.
