Through the “Enhancing CSOs’ Participation in Governance and National Level Policy Processes” project, funded by the European Union in Sierra Leone, ActionAid Sierra Leone and its partners, Women’s Action for Human Dignity Sierra Leone – WAHD SL and Advocate for Social Justice and Development – A S J D- SL has organized a National People’s Convergence in Freetown.
This gathering brought together key stakeholders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and government representatives to address pressing policy issues and advocate for good governance. The platform aimed to amplify citizens’ voices, ensuring policies reflect their needs and priorities.
Speaking at the event, Foday Bassie Swaray, Executive Director of ActionAid Sierra Leone, stressed the need for inclusive governance, emphasizing that leadership must deliver for all citizens.
He encouraged CSOs to work in collaboration with one another and ask the many questions of duty bearers.
The EU representative at the event, Els Montier, talked on the critical role of collective effort in fostering peace and national cohesion. She highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to shaping sustainable development. She also underscored the necessity of integrating stronger monitoring mechanisms into development processes.
Abu Bakarr Kamara, Coordinator of the Budget Advocacy Network Sierra Leone (BAN), pointed out the importance of prioritizing marginalized groups, particularly persons with disabilities, in policy decisions. He also touched on the underrepresentation of women in decision-making.
Mohamed Fofana, Head of Programs and Policy ActionAid Sierra Leone, reiterated that the event’s goal is to support CSOs to demand answers from leaders on their commitments to communities.
The convergence concluded with a unified call for inclusive policies, greater accountability, and sustainable solutions to governance challenges in Sierra Leone.
