Philanthropist Adonis Aboud has urged both citizens and leaders to prioritize the welfare of children, affirming that they are “our greatest assets” who require significant support to build a brighter future for Sierra Leone.

Speaking from his residence in Hamilton, Freetown, Aboud made his remarks at the launch of his new book, which highlights his extensive work in healthcare, education, and community development over recent decades.

The journey of Aboud’s charitable efforts began in January 2001, when he, Shellac Sonny Davies, and Barbara Bangura co-founded Pikin Bizness, a charitable organization focused on assisting children in need.

In its first three years, the organization collaborated with the World Food Programme (WFP), the U.S. Embassy, and UNAMSIL, with sponsorship from DSTV/SL, to carry out Christmas gift distributions across the country. A helicopter was utilized to deliver items such as sweets, drinks, radio sets, school bags, and educational materials to children, with support from NGOs like Caritas Makeni and the International Medical Corps (IMC) to identify beneficiaries.

In 2005, prompted by a campaign from the Exclusive Newspaper for a six-year-old boy named Abu Bakarr Jalloh, who suffered from a heart defect, Pikin Bizness expanded its focus to children with heart deficiencies and related illnesses. This campaign was pivotal and led to further fundraising efforts aimed at saving lives.

Aboud recounted their initial project in 2001 concerning Abu Bakarr’s urgent need for heart surgery abroad. His story was compelling enough to attract international attention, even being broadcast on CNN. Following this exposure, Aboud noted an influx of similar cases, highlighting the urgent need for medical assistance for children facing life-threatening conditions.

A senior journalist from the Financial Times in Paris, David, recognized Aboud’s efforts and introduced him to a cardiologist in Paris, facilitating the transport of children in need of heart surgeries overseas. Aboud has since overseen numerous heart surgery cases for children, ensuring they receive the necessary medical care.

Adonis Aboud is recognized as a prominent figure in Sierra Leone known not only as a businessman but also for his philanthropic contributions. His involvement spans various sectors, including import and export, with a strong commitment to community development and social initiatives.

His dedication to education, healthcare, and youth empowerment continues to make a significant impact in Sierra Leone.
