The FA Cup dream came to an end for Plymouth Argyle as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Premier League giants Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The League One side was ultimately outclassed by the quality and depth of Pep Guardiola’s side.
Plymouth opened the scoring in the 38th minute, stunning the home crowd and giving the Pilgrims a glimmer of hope. However, City’s relentless pressure paid off as N. O’Reilly and K. De Bruyne both found the back of the net, securing the victory for the reigning Premier League champions.
Plymouth’s manager, Miron Muslic, praised his team’s effort, saying, We gave it our all, but Manchester City’s quality and experience proved too much for us in the end. I’m proud of the way the lads fought and made a game of it, but we just couldn’t sustain the pressure in the second half.
The result means that Manchester City advances to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, keeping their dreams of a historic treble alive. As for Plymouth, they can hold their heads high after their spirited display against one of the world’s best teams.
