On the 10th of December, 2024, President Julius Maada Bio hosted a Presidential Media Cocktail at the Country Lodge Hotel in Freetown, where he emphasized the significance of press freedom and the role of an independent press in driving democracy.
The event commenced with a welcoming address from the Press Secretary Yusuf Kekehtoma Sandi, underscoring the government’s commitment to creating a platform for open dialogue and fostering a society where freedom of expression thrives.

During the cocktail, President Bio was honored by the President of SLAJ, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, as a Champion of Press Freedom for repealing the criminal libel law, a significant milestone in promoting a free and transparent media environment.
President Bio highlighted the government’s efforts in providing a conducive environment for the media to operate effectively, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to uphold the principles of honesty, transparency, and accountability.

In his keynote address, President Bio applauded the role of the media in promoting national unity and democratic values, reaffirming his commitment to upholding peace and justice.
He showcased the administration’s accomplishments in combating corruption, improving transparency, and advancing key initiatives such as the ‘Feed Salone’ program. President Bio pledged increased support for SLAJ, signaling a commitment to bolstering independent media and safeguarding press freedom in Sierra Leone.
The Presidential Media Cocktail served as a platform for reflection on past achievements and a vision for the future, highlighting the government’s dedication to promoting media development, civic education, and sustainable healthcare in the country.
As Sierra Leone continues on its path towards progress, President Bio’s administration stands firm in its resolve to support press freedom and uphold democratic principles for the benefit of all citizens.
