The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has sent a message to mark the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, calling for unity, patriotism, and a strong media role in national development.
In a statement issued on the occasion, SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara congratulated citizens of Sierra Leone both at home and abroad. He described the anniversary as a moment to reflect on the country’s journey and progress since independence.
Mr Kamara said the media remains a key pillar in strengthening democracy. He noted that journalists have a duty to promote truth, ensure accountability, and support national unity through responsible reporting.
He added that the role of the press is important in giving a voice to the people and contributing to the country’s development. According to him, a credible and independent media will help build trust and support good governance.
The SLAJ president also called on Sierra Leoneans to use the celebration as a time to renew their commitment to peace and national progress. He said the anniversary should inspire citizens to work together for a better future.
Sierra Leone is marking 65 years of independence under the theme “One Nation, One People, One Future,” with messages of unity coming from different sectors across the country.
