The National Revenue Authority (NRA) under the leadership of Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura will host a major Regional Customs Conference; preparations are in full motion. The event is the 32nd Conference of Directors General of Customs for the West and Central Africa Region of the World Customs Organization (WCO-WCA);This event signals growing trust in Sierra Leone’s customs system.
The conference is set for May 2026; it will gather Directors General of Customs, technical experts, development partners, and private sector actors. Discussions will focus on stronger customs systems; improved trade facilitation.
Pre-conference meetings will begin earlier; with the Private Sector Group on 4th May and followed by The Regional Experts Committee from May 5th to 6th 2026. These sessions will shape the main conference outcomes. They will provide technical input;as well as ensure broad stakeholder views.
The theme is clear and purposeful; ’A customs that protects society through its vigilance and commitment.’ The focus will be on security and trade; as both work together. Key topics will include digital transformation and smart customs systems. Compliance systems will also be reviewed; cooperation against illicit trade will be strengthened.
The NRA is working closely with key partners; the WCO-WCA Secretariat and the Regional Capacity Building Office are involved. This collaboration is deliberate; it aims to ensure a smooth and impactful conference. Hosting the event reflects confidence in the NRA; it also highlights progress in reform and innovation.
The Commissioner General has played a central role; her leadership has been steady and strategic. She has strengthened systems; she has promoted transparency. She has encouraged innovation; this has improved the Authority’s reputation. Her efforts helped secure this opportunity; and has positioned the NRA as a credible regional actor.
The conference will review past resolutions; new policy directions will be agreed. Collaboration will be deepened; partnerships will be strengthened. Engagement with international bodies and the private sector will continue; this is vital for efficient and secure trade.
Each country will send its Director General of Customs; a technical expert will also attend. This ensures balance; both policy and operations will be addressed. Discussions will be practical; solutions will be forward-looking.
Preparations are ongoing; momentum is strong. The Authority remains focused on delivery; success is a clear target. The event will mark a key moment; it will strengthen regional cooperation. It will also advance customs administration across West and Central Africa; all activities will take place at the Freetown International Conference Centre, Bintumani Hotel, Aberdeen Freetown.
